Ok, well I need to get a laptop for everyday use, school, and of course, entertainment  Gamer

I want it to last me a while as well. My uncle works at IBM so I can get his employee discount...and here's what I'm looking at...any thoughts are welcome on if this is a good buy or not.

Lenovo IdeaPad Y710 - 40542AU
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T8100 NV ( 2.10GHz 800MHz 3MB )
Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium
17.0 WUXGA TFT with integrated camera LCD Glossy
ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 512MB
4 GB PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM 667MHz
250GB 5400
DVD Recordable (Dual Layer) 24X Max
Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN
6 Cell Lithium-Ion
One year parts and labor (system battery: one year)

Sale price: $1,349.10*

Ships within 3-5 bus. days

I haven't used a PC under IBM/Lenovo before, but they seem to get nice reviews. I found almost the exact same laptop on newegg except it was a 256mb video card, and one guy said he could play Crysis on full blast except shadows on medium.

Good buy? Bad buy? It seems like a very reasonable price given the specs for it.

Yeah i'm trying to get ahold of my uncle to see if its possible at all to swap in a faster processor in the Y710. I'd like to get the 9300 in there (2.5GHZ  6MB cache) if at all possible.

Change of plans. Since its been damn near impossible to get a laptop with the stuff i want in it, i'm planning on...

Dirt cheap laptop for school that can run Office.
New gaming desktop rig.

Now here's what I'm looking at.

Dell Vostro 1000

AMD AthlonTM 64 X2 Dual-Core processor TK-57 (1.9GHz/256KB)
Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium, Service Pack 1
1 Year Basic Limited Warranty plus 1 Year Mail-in Service
LCD PANEL 15.4 inch Wide Screen XGA LCD Anti-Glare Display
1GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHZ, 2 Dimm
120GB 5400RPM Hard Drive
8X DVD+/-RW w/Double-layer DVD+R Write Capability
ATI Radeon® Xpress 1150 256MB HyperMemory™ (integrated)
WI-FI WIRELESS CARD Dell Wireless 1395 802.11g Wi-Fi Internal Card

$483

Dell XPS 630

Intel® Core™2 E8400 (6MB,3.0 GHz, 1333FSB)
Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium Service Pack 1
4GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 800MHz - 4 DIMMs
500GB - 7200RPM, SATA 3.0Gb/s, 16MB Cache
Single Drive: 16X CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) w/double layer write capability
No Monitor
Dual nVidia GeForce 9800 GT 512MB
Integrated 7.1 Channel Audio
No speakers (Speakers are required to hear audio from your system)
Dell USB Keyboard
Dell Optical USB Mouse

$1339

Microsoft Office Student Edition x2 at newegg = $180

Grand Total = $2000

Think i can get any of this stuff cheaper? I need to have this settled in a week or less.

Looks like it will be a nice little set up you have there.

I got no idea if you can find it cheaper or not.

Yeah i can get a quad core 2.4ghz for the same price...but i don't think its worth the purchase at this point. Most games are just figuring out how to utilize 2 cores. I don't think quad cores will come into play for a couple years and by that time a 2.4 will be out of date anyways.

Games aren't the only thing computers are used for. Shocking, I know. :P

Haha yes i know. But all that crazy multimedia stuff that quad cores are shining in right now i won't be doing. Or as one guy said on some debate forum..."i can run 7 mmorpg's, AV software, itunes, wmp, firefox, IE, and messenger programs all at once!" Well thats sweet dude but...how many of those can you actually interact with at once? 7 mmorpgs lol...

Multitasking ...

Exactly. I can do pretty much whatever I want on my Mac Pro no matter what else I'm doing. Running two instances of WoW (had a trial account as well to possibly fool around with dual-boxing which I never ended up doing), iTunes, Firefox with 20+ tabs open, Handbrake ripping/decoding a dvd, and downloading from newsgroups all at the same time is not a problem at all. Of course it's not like I'm usually doing that much at once, but I can.

I understand that you can do that...but i don't do any of those things in the first place. I don't burn DVD's, i don't d/l stuff from newsites, i don't multitask multimedia in the backgrounds, i play one game at a time.

iTunes/firefox/IE aren't really an issue for either processor. If those are, might as well add mine sweeper :p

But in all seriousness I still can't make up my mind on the dual vs quad. From what i've read, for gaming purposes, the faster dual is the better choice for now. And thats simply b/c game producers simply have not caught up to the technology yet. In 3 years? Different ballgame i'm sure...but by that time today's quad cores will be out of date anyways since they are just the babies of the generation.

Intel® Core™2 E8400 (6MB,3.0 GHz, 1333FSB)
or
Intel® Core™2 Q6600 Quad-Core (8MB L2 cache,2.40GHz,1066FSB)

The dual is faster per core, and a higher bus. The quad is faster all cores combined, larger l2 cache, but slower fsb. They are the same price on dell's site. However, on Newegg, the quad core is listed at $195 and teh dual core is listed at $175.

Any last thoughts/votes on the processor? I do appreciate the input thus far :)
