School bans tag, other chase games

ATTLEBORO, Massachusetts (AP) -- Tag, you're out!

Officials at an elementary school south of Boston have banned kids from playing tag, touch football and any other unsupervised chase game during recess for fear they'll get hurt and hold the school liable.

Recess is "a time when accidents can happen," said Willett Elementary School Principal Gaylene Heppe, who approved the ban.

While there is no districtwide ban on contact sports during recess, local rules have been cropping up. Several school administrators around Attleboro, a city of about 45,000 residents, took aim at dodgeball a few years ago, saying it was exclusionary and dangerous.

Elementary schools in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Spokane, Washington, also recently banned tag during recess. A suburban Charleston, South Carolina, school outlawed all unsupervised contact sports.

"I think that it's unfortunate that kids' lives are micromanaged and there are social skills they'll never develop on their own," said Debbie Laferriere, who has two children at Willett, about 40 miles south of Boston. "Playing tag is just part of being a kid."

Another Willett parent, Celeste D'Elia, said her son feels safer because of the rule. "I've witnessed enough near collisions," she said.

What the hell is wrong with people? Things are just going way to far. So kids aren't allowed to basically play at all during recess now. No touching, no contact, no running, no pushing. What are they going to do? Sit around and play cards? Why not just strap them all down to their desks and be done with it.

I wonder what the parents will say when they realize that their children are complete pussies later in life? Having been shielded from even the slightest bump ro scrape, I can foresee adults screaming in agony if someone steps on their toe. Quickly followed by a multi-million dollar lawsuit of course... Kids are resiliant. Kids are basically made to take bumps and bruises. It's all part of having fun and playing. God forbid we actually let our children be children. Most adults I know raced to become adults. They did everything they could to get rid of any childlike tendencies. Being a child is the most amazing time fo your life. You're free to explore yourself and the world. Why would anyone want to give that up? These same people, while they may think that have a "good life" are most of the time miserable due to the stresses they impose on themselves. If they just retained some of their childhood awe of everything around them, and remembered to have fun whenever possible, their lives would be so much happier. Now since their lives are bleak holes of stress, responsibilities, and the neverending lust for money, they'll destroy their child's lives too by removing what fun they can. People really need to realign their priorities.

I'm so incredibly glad that I was a kid back when kids were still allowed to be kids.

I have  neighbors with the same mentality.  Massachusetts in general will make your mind spin out of control with all its rules and bs politics.  Great place to live, but some of the people are real jackasses.  Its the ones that believe whats right for them is right for everyone, that give this state a bad name.

If I were to make an example of out a game of TAG.  If you don't want your child to get touched by another child, instruct them not to play the game.  TAG without touching is not TAG, its running.  Go tell your kids to run in circles instead.  Whats next, eliminate the bat from wiffle ball, and replace all balls with Nerfs?

poor kids what is the world coming too

5th and 6th grade we played touch football and even though i fell riped my cloths one time i even bruise my face and knees pretty bad but i caught the damn ball...a few of my friends chip teeth I even broke this guys ankle in winter but none the less good times. My mom never called the school to complain...she would just slap me in the head told me to play more carefully..old friends from grade school still talk about those times while we play poker
with all the school we have now we barely have time to have good times anymore. You cant put a price on your child hood

They wonder why more and more kids r getting obese they keep taking away there shit... i can see them now walking around like cows in a pen. Bah

Wiffle balls have small holes in the ball. A finger could slip inside and if the ball is grabbed by someone, rip the finger right off, causing the child to bleed to death on the spot. So no wiffle balls either.

Nerf would probably be banned too. They have a sniper rifle: Nerf N-Strike Longshot CS-6 Make sure to watch the commercial. When it's stock, it only shoots 35 feet, but apparently you can modify it a little bit and it will shoot up to 100 feet! Gamer

I think this is just stupid! Give them time and they will outlaw parks and beach activities, non-school sports and people will be going to jail for child endangerment simply for allowing their kids to play and just be kids.

I battle the local schools here all the time for trying to infringe on my authority as a parent so I repeat this is Stupidity and Socialism in action.

If everybody would start sueing theses stupid people and organizations like the ACLU or others that seek out ways to currupt society then this will continue to get worse!
