Title: Re: MoFo & Steam Post by: Ringo on October 16, 2007, 08:04:30 PM Mac said steam gave him a ton of in game lag on quake wars. Anyone else have this
Title: Re: MoFo & Steam Post by: Machine on October 16, 2007, 08:40:03 PM I'm done with steam, I forgot why I quit using it for CS:Source, lag like a MF!
I could play TF2 if there were only 4 people on a server, any more than that and all I could do is medic or snipe. Same with Quake Wars, except all I could do was snipe and not all that effectively, on a hunch I bought Quake Wars again and installed off of the disc (instead of steam dnld) and used my cd-key I got from the steam one then went in to a game, the lag was way better but there was still some lag issues. I then completely uninstalled Steam and I'm good to go. Unfortunately it took TF2 with it. Title: Re: MoFo & Steam Post by: Soni on October 16, 2007, 09:16:13 PM Your computer must just suck Mac. :-P I haven't had any problems with TF2 or Portal. I don't have QW, so I couldn't say anything about that.
Maybe you had some bad drivers that Steam didn't like? Title: Re: MoFo & Steam Post by: yarrr on October 16, 2007, 09:42:26 PM I had an awful experience with steam recently, as soni heard all about it from my complaining. Basically i was playing TF2 a lot in the beta, then i got into the hellgate london beta and didn't play TF2 for a couple days. TF2 got released and i loaded it up and steam told me my video drivers were out of date, so i checked first and indeed they were.
Downloaded ATI's 7.9 and windows wouldn't start. After several tries i had to go to an older version, 7.8. Windows started up and things seemed to be ok, until i started up Steam. Under task manager, my CPU went up and stayed at 100% if i clicked on the Community tab. If i was out of the community tab, the CPU spiked from 10-50% just idling...scrolling the mouse put it in the 80s. After doing some looking on valve's support forums, apparently a lot of people are having the lag problem. With some its just a bad computer, but valve added a file so that the Community runs no matter what game you're playing. This is causing massive lag to some people, but to others it doesn't. People were talking solutions such as memory leaks and drivers taking up too much memory. Not finding much help there, i went to ATI's site and saw that a few hours earlier they posted new drivers, 7.10. I downloaded those and had no lag issues in Steam at all. TF2 ran fine like it did before. I would mess around and see if you have the absolute latest vid drivers on your card and maybe check out valve's support forums. (for reference my video card is a radeon x1600) I had no idea that video drivers would cause lag in Steam :dontknow: Title: Re: MoFo & Steam Post by: El_Hefe on October 16, 2007, 10:53:20 PM zero problems for me... :dontknow:
Title: Re: MoFo & Steam Post by: vempire on October 16, 2007, 11:03:12 PM No lag in anything here either. I've got all the Halflife games, TF2, CS: Source, and Doom 3 and the expansion all through Steam.
Title: Re: MoFo & Steam Post by: Phoenix on October 17, 2007, 11:34:45 AM Mac, if this is a brand new installation of Steam and you're experiencing lag, it's most likely caused by all the updates Steam is downloading. If you bought the Orange Box, that's a whole lot of updates! :ninja:
You can disable automatic updates while you're playing and then have no lag. :brunette:  :blond: Title: Re: MoFo & Steam Post by: yarrr on October 17, 2007, 01:43:42 PM When was the last time you used Steam mac? Because they updated it a few weeks ago i think, which is where they put in the file called GameOverlayUI which is whats causing a bunch of problems for people. I believe thats the file that forces you to have the Community tab open and running no matter what game you're playing. Valve was trying to come up with fixes for this, there's a big thread on their support forums, it may help.
Title: Re: MoFo & Steam Post by: Machine on October 17, 2007, 03:40:37 PM The last time I used steam was in 2005 I think, I was able to reclaim my old account and the last time I remember turning off all BS running along with it. After they get a fix for it I will have to re-download TF2 and see if it helps.
B.T.W I have the latest drivers for my gfx card. Title: Re: MoFo & Steam Post by: yarrr on October 17, 2007, 09:36:02 PM you should delete your interpolate out of your steam folder and it might work
Title: Re: MoFo & Steam Post by: Machine on October 17, 2007, 11:33:04 PM I did, I think it might be the nofog that is killing it :pirate:
